MUCH ADO ABOUT OVIE OMO-AGEGE’S ATTACK
Andrew Olomu, Ph.D
The social media has been inundated with the report of the recent attack on the senator representing Delta central senatorial district, Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege at Effurun market in Uvwie Local Government Area, Delta State. While the attack is condemnable in his totality by all well-meaning humans, the manner in which the supporters of the senator’s 2019 senatorial bid are going about the issue makes one wonders if there is more to that incident than meets the eyes. The foul cries by the supporters of the senator (and the senator himself) are best characterized as argumentum ad passions (appeal to emotions).
One of the foul cries is the article by one Barr. JESUTEGA ONOKPASA in which he insinuates that the PDP is behind the attack on the senator. Although, this is a possibility, objectivity however requires that other possibilities are examined, and all possibilities weighted on some empirical pieces of evidence.
In my thinking’s thought, beside the possibility of the PDP-sponsor, the attack on Sen. Omo-Agege may have been from his own party, the APC. This is because the internal conflict in Delta APC, the power play in the party and the desperation by its members to use federal might to cling to power in Delta State has the potential to fuel such embers. Secondly, the attack may be as a result of the perceived failure of the senator. So far so good (so far so bad), nothing can really be said of the ACTUAL achievement of the senator (not even in his home town- Orogun), except perhaps his regular update of senate proceedings. Thirdly, the event may have been a well stage-managed episode to draw sympathy over his abysmal performance.
All of these are possibilities which must be weighed with some empirical evidence. Suffice to state that a similar attack, by perhaps the same people was melted on PDP supporters in 2015 at the same place as reported by Barrister Ivweghrebuno in his article, Ovie Omo-Agege’s attack: The parrable of conspiracy against the owl.
This is in addition to the fact that the Delta state commissioner of police has debugged the possibility of the incident being an attack on the life of the senator.
