The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) was established in 1973.
1973-2017 is 44 years. If for 44 good years, you cannot find authoritative reliable source where you can trace the word ‘Corper’ to mean a ‘Serving Youth Corps Member’, then you should avoid using the word.
I have done a lot of research as a ‘Linguist’ and have come to understand that the word ‘corper’ is the bastardized word for ‘corps member’.
Nigeria is one country that love killing languages.
No wonder Languages are dying very often for the ‘pidgin English’ rampant usage in the country.
Pidgin English is the cause of languages deforestation in Africa.
We have lost so many languages in Africa to the bastard language (Pidgin English).
A language that has no authenticated ‘letters of the alphabet’.
People just speak and write the pidgin English anyhow, any which way, at random, haphazardly, helter-skelter, in one way or another, under any circumstances, whatever happens, willy-nilly and end up producing what will contradict itself.
No language contradict itself in writing and speaking.
Warri for example, people invent pidgin English carelessly on daily basis.
The handbook titled
‘ABC of Community Development Service’ published in June, 2014 and revised in October, 2014 which the incumbent NYSC Director-General, Brig-Gen JB Olawumi FSS, MSS, psc(+)fdc stamped his forward on page iv-v has no word like ‘corper’ from the beginning to the very ending of the book.
The book is an authoritative book for Community Development Service which every corps member must embark for the period of the service year.
I have read several works on several authoritative websites talking about the ills of NYSC, but non has used the word ‘corper’ rather they use ‘corps member(s). Punch, Vanguard and a host of others.
I have listened to different director-generals of the NYSC at different time in my 1 generation of earth’s existence and have come to understand that the word ‘corper’ is from the stable of the following:
Mind you, a Ph.D holder can make blunders just like every other person. Even a professor can make a lot of blunders.
Types of Word Formation Processes
As a Linguist, I know of word-formation processes such as:
But the word ‘corper’ is just another way of killing language.
The rampant use of the word ‘corper’ in camps
Very few people use the word ‘corps member(s) now in camps.
It is even heartbreaking to see State Coordinators and Directors of the NYSC using this word.
Don’t blame them. Blame the society. Many will say.
With mouth wide-spread like a football pitch, I stare and gawp at them.
I have met some concerned citizens and they prescribed the following to replace the [corper of a word]:
The only valid place online you will see the word corper on wikipedia www.wikipedia.org was a redirected page and not corper being a topic. See it below
