[Poetry] EDIBLES CHRONICLES

Kilishi is a specie of spiced flaky meat
Tasty but there’re many germs to beat
Its a protein delicacy from north west
Many may enjoy it but it’s not my best

Sharwama is a costly eclectic sausage
Laced within its cavity is protean foliage
It’s our local analogue of western burger
Day after day the unit price grows bigger

Regarding suya there’s no novel citation
We’ ve all savoured it without exception
We rarely remember the risk in the cover
Slur in the wrap should make us shudder

With a base price tag analogous to a rape
Tomatoes nearly launched a menu escape
Many had no qualms making it dispensible
And palm-fruit stew soon became likeable

Until lately rice was a poor man’s staple
The current price makes many unstable
There’s nothing handy for a vital rescue
It’s a wild wonder what option to pursue

Cost are pushing food choices narrower
It’s quite a tough luck even for a widower
Menu preference is now on secondment
Now it’s simply about tissue nourishment

It’s now a daily struggle to subdue hunger
For long the masses are made to hunker
Nothing or little is left of our middle class
Just very few are spared of this sorry pass
