Uncle Johnny…[Part Three]

In a village like Kala-Ama, unmarried pregnant women are rarely seen. They seem to have over a hundred women with different sizes and shapes. It is a tradition in Kala-Ama Village. All their women are endowed with physiques; so beautiful, resilient and invigorated. Sixty percent of female are river oriented and other forty percent are between house-wife and fishing. The major occupation in Kala-Ama Village is fishing.

FABIA, a young man, sitting outside his pavement with a happily married face, who in his little way had done the final rites in taking Sotom as a wife. Entered Sotom.

Sotom: ‘my husband, why are you sitting here all alone?’ Has anybody angered you?’

Fabia: ‘Not at all, I am just been speculative on how it all started and how it is now? How we were hiding from Papa and Mama; just pondering now we’re together’

Sotom: ‘Oh That? Do still remember, how Papa was chasing us around like a cat to a mouse? Ah! With smile woven face, she hugged him, I am yours forever ‘ she enthused.

‘Smiles also evaporated from Fabia’s cheek, ‘a good and lovely wife is like a new hook, it always attracts fishes.’

Sotom was swept off her feet. She kissed him with soften side of her lips. He drew her close, caresses and carried her into the room.

All over Kala-Ama Village, they believe that August-break is the festival of the fishes and fishes of all sorts are extensively seen.

Every two dry and flows of the river; are times kept for ‘fie’ne’ ‘tie`mei’ known to them as fire dancing. All single women of Kala-Ama village come there in groups to exhibit different dance steps. Riotous drumming from the `ku’ku’ ‘faribo’ would re-echo the neighborhoods around ama’ogbo’ called square.

The children would be so excited for the night. The bachelors usually gaze through sleepless nights to fill their lust and loneliness.

Duties would be given and betrothed ones could get fully married traditionally in the presence of the people. If you were Lucky to get a bride or groom, he or she would show affections for all eyes to see.

Before maidens get ready for the evocative evening dance, some mothers will cook while others will reverberate. `Nj’iris’ to send every maiden to her admirers for compliments.

Lamb of the Mighty One illuminates darkness from the face of ‘Ama’ogbo’, the aged had to bring elderly steps, to open the night contest; by defining the onerousness in Kala-Ama Village.

Sacred of the night, always ends at the night. None has to tell the story again, because it is a sacred event in Kala-Ama village once it is time, the town crier takes the news around early morning, before the cockcrows.

‘Maidens without plaited hairs should not perturb themselves for the night dance’ Once this is proclaimed, all beauty single maidens of Kala-Ama Village gets ready for the night with hidden dressing styles, but all must be with `Nji’ri’s.

Long, long time ago, the children were told stories of how the water would bring a choice of any fish to a fisherman who leaps at the river bank seven times, a night before  fie’ne’ ‘tie`mei, Singing…

These fables and many others are tales for the children while the men, women and young male and woman whirl with strong to ignite the rituals.

Okirita sat below while Wariba, her Mum gives her an ancient braiding called ‘Aka’so’…. The hair is believed to be a hair style of goddess of the salt water called `Aka’so’, so it was named after her.

Okirita: ‘Mum, please careful make this hair, let it look nice on me, because I want all the single men adoring me’

Wariba: ‘laughs, my daughter. I, your Mother Wariba, am I not beautiful?’

Okirita: ‘you’re very beautiful?’

Wariba: ‘Just believe in your beauty; let my fingers do the plaiting’

Okirita: ‘I love you Mum’

Wariba: ‘laughs, I love you too. Please stop shaking your head, let me get this hair done’

Okirita ‘ Mum, slowly please it’s hurts’

Wariba ‘ sorry, no pain, no gain’


In about one hour, twenty five seconds, they finished the braiding…

Okirita went for the mirror, as she saw her hairy beauty. She smiled, ‘Mum, look how wholly and apealling my face had become ‘Mum, I’m the night queen of affections. She said to herself smiling, `erewo in the making, you have no opposition’.

Wariba stood for minutes starring at her daughter, magnificently praising herself.

Nodded and went into her room.
